Meet Us

We're teachers, just trying to do what all good teachers try to do...

We are a small team of experienced, passionate and dedicated teachers who believe learning should be fun, relevant and challenging.

An integral part of schooling is (summative) assessment; we believe this can be made more realistic and holistic through lower stakes (and higher frequency) experiences that consider soft (social) as well as hard (subject-specific) skills.

Competition Academy® is a platform to evolve school assessment in this direction. We currently facilitate collaborative networking environments for students as well as teachers through a growing pyramid of increasingly-challenging subject-specific residential competitions, each spread over a few days. The World Mathematics Championships® is the pinnacle of this pyramid.

Our vision is for all young people to be inspired by academic challenge throughout the world.

To do this, our mission is to engage lots of young people enjoying creative learning through collaboration and competition.

Please contact us with your ideas if this evolving model of assessment resonates with you!

Giles Jacobson was born in the UK and has been teaching in secondary and high schools, predominantly in Asia, since the 1990s. His main teaching subject specialism is Mathematics, although he is equally passionate about the pastoral role within formal education. In 2006 he became fascinated with the possibility that learning (of/for) assessment should be positive experiences, the exact opposite of what happens within current systems. This led him to begin an EdD researching influences upon children's happiness, but in 2015 he decided to try and directly address the issue by focusing more time and attention on the continually expanding competition model (SEAMC) that he was already an intimate part of coordinating instead. Let's see where this journey takes us...

Simi Shah started teaching after a successful career in accountancy and financial software. She has taught Mathematics in secondary schools both in the UK and South East Asia. Simi is passionate that Mathematics should be accessible to all students and a positive, rewarding experience for them so she actively looks for way to promote this.
